Overview
Dongfang is located in the southwestern part of Hainan province, on the south side of the beautiful and fertile Changhua River. It faces Vietnam across the sea and is the third largest coastal city in Hainan. Covering an area of 2,272 square kilometers, the city has a tropical oceanic monsoon climate, with an average of eight hours of sunshine daily and a year-round average temperature of 24-25 C.
It is home to Hainan Eld's deer, which are listed among national first-level protected animals. Macaques living in the Tian'an area are rare and something of a mystery to tourists. Dongfang also has rich reserves of gold, phosphorus, zinc, crystal, quartz sand, granite, and natural gas. People in Dongfang benefit from advantageous geographical conditions, such as millions of hectares of tropical plains, a 128.4 km long coastline, and unexplored wetlands.
With an abundance of tourism resources, Dongfang possesses broad development potential. It possesses beautiful natural scenery, historical sites, and the unique local customs of the Li and Miao ethnic groups. Currently, the tourism resources to be developed here include the Daguangba Scenic Area, Hongxing Hot Springs, Datianpo Deer Scenic Area, Monkey Hill Forest Scenic Area, Moon Bay, Yalong Ethnic Customs Scenic Area, Longquan Mountain, and Yulinzhou. Its cultural attractions include General Fubo Well, Fulong Park, Ganen Beacon Tower Sites, and the Prehistoric Cultural Sites of China.
In 2020, Dongfang is projected to have achieved: a regional GDP of 18.31 billion yuan ($2.83 billion); fixed asset investment of 8.83 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 10 percent; and urban and rural permanent residents' per capita disposable income of 36,127 yuan and 16,462 yuan respectively, a year-on-year increase of 3 percent and 7 percent respectively. All this has laid a solid foundation for the high-quality development of Dongfang during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25).
