Overview

Dongfang is located in the southwestern part of Hainan province, on the south side of the beautiful and fertile Changhua River. It faces Vietnam across the sea and is the third largest coastal city in Hainan. Covering an area of 2,272 square kilometers, the city has a tropical oceanic monsoon climate, with an average of eight hours of sunshine daily and a year-round average temperature of 24-25 C.

It is home to Hainan Eld's deer, which are listed among national first-level protected animals. Macaques living in the Tian'an area are rare and something of a mystery to tourists. Dongfang also has rich reserves of gold, phosphorus, zinc, crystal, quartz sand, granite, and natural gas. People in Dongfang benefit from advantageous geographical conditions, such as millions of hectares of tropical plains, a 128.4 km long coastline, and unexplored wetlands.

With an abundance of tourism resources, Dongfang possesses broad development potential. It possesses beautiful natural scenery, historical sites, and the unique local customs of the Li and Miao ethnic groups. Currently, the tourism resources to be developed here include the Daguangba Scenic Area, Hongxing Hot Springs, Datianpo Deer Scenic Area, Monkey Hill Forest Scenic Area, Moon Bay, Yalong Ethnic Customs Scenic Area, Longquan Mountain, and Yulinzhou. Its cultural attractions include General Fubo Well, Fulong Park, Ganen Beacon Tower Sites, and the Prehistoric Cultural Sites of China.

In 2020, Dongfang is projected to have achieved: a regional GDP of 18.31 billion yuan ($2.83 billion); fixed asset investment of 8.83 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 10 percent; and urban and rural permanent residents' per capita disposable income of 36,127 yuan and 16,462 yuan respectively, a year-on-year increase of 3 percent and 7 percent respectively. All this has laid a solid foundation for the high-quality development of Dongfang during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25).

Resources

Oil and gas resources

Dongfang's coastline is 128.4 kilometers long, and there are abundant oil and gas resources under the sea bed. The proven natural gas reserves are 232.1 billion cubic meters. The Dongfang 1-1 gas field is the third largest natural gas field in China, with an annual output of 2.4 billion cubic meters, and the shore 13-1 gas field has an annual output of 3.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

Marine resources

Dongfang has a sea area of 1,285 square kilometers, with seven bays and eight ports. Shallow sea (under 10 meters of water depth) covers an area of approximate 20,883 hectares and a mudflat area of 10,037 hectares, of which 6,799 hectares are available for the breeding industry. The Dongfang Saltern  is the second largest salt field in Hainan Province, covering an area of more than 20,235 hectares, with an average annual output of 45,000 tons of raw salt.

Fishery resources

The northwest part of Dongfang city is the Beibu Gulf fishing ground, and the city is also close to the vast South China Sea fishing ground. With its fertile water, suitable water temperature, and moderate salinity, Dongfang is rich with fishery resources - more than 70 of which are freshwater species. It is one of the sea areas with the most development potential in China.

Mineral resources

The main proven mineral deposits in Dongfang city include gold, phosphorus, iron, copper, tungsten, titanium, aluminum, silver, crystal, mica, etc. The mineral resources of building materials mainly include limestone, granite, marble, and quartz sand. Oriental quartz sand here has the highest purity and the best quality of anywhere in the country, with a silicon content of over 98 percent. The sand used in the beach volleyball courts of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games was all from Dongfang's quartz sand. At present, the proven reserves of quartz sand ore in the East have reached more than 20 million tons, with an area of about 18 square kilometers.

Water resources

Dongfang City has abundant hydro-energy resources, as it has numerous rivers. The main rivers are Changhua River, Gan’en River, Luodai River, Tongtian River, Beili River, Nangang River and the tributaries of Changhua River - Dongfang River and Nanyao River. The total length of these rives is 526.9 kilometers. They have a basin area of 6,878 square kilometers, and theoretical water resource reserves of 250,000 kilowatts.
