In the past 10 years, Sanya's three major industries, the deep-sea, Nanfan seed, and aerospace industries, have been developing vigorously, helping it build a science and innovation hub of the Hainan Free Trade Port and turning Sanya into a national innovative city.
In 2021, China's deep-sea manned submersibleFendouzhe, orStriver, made 23 dives, of which six dives exceeded 10,000 meters, according to the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering was established in Sanya in 2016, aiming to build a "one-stop" industrial chain integrating deep-sea scientific research, talent training, and industrial cultivation. It also focuses on elevating China's deep-sea research and manned deep diving to the forefront of the world.
In recent years, Sanya has given full play to its natural location advantages to building a Nanfan Silicon Valley. On May 12, 2021, Yazhou Bay Seed Laboratory was put into operation and started to tackle 76 major key projects.
To date, Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City has attracted 17 well-known agricultural universities and research institutes to settle in it. It has also introduced 415 well-known seed enterprises at home and abroad.
In addition, Sanya has made continuous breakthroughs in the space field. A satellite big data center has been built in Sanya, while the dynamic monitoring and application results of remote sensing, such as coastal zone change, agricultural monitoring, tropical forest distribution and supervision, as well as ecological environment and urban planning, have been achieved.
To date, the incubator of Sanya's Remote Sensing Data Industrial Park has introduced and incubated 322 enterprises, with an output value of about 120 million yuan ($16.7 million) and 228 intellectual property rights in total.
