China's recently released "No 1 central document" for 2025 emphasizes leveraging the significant agricultural research platforms like the "Nanfan Silicon Valley" to accelerate the breakthrough of pioneering crop varieties, highlighting Nanfan's important position in ensuring food security.
Nanfan is driving the acceleration of seed breeding in southern China's warmer climate, significantly enhancing the adaptability of crop varieties. It now accounts for over 70 percent of the nation's newly developed crop varieties.
Sanya, the core area of "Nanfan Silicon Valley", shoulders the crucial responsibility of serving the national food security strategy with its unique natural conditions and profound research foundation.
To build a top-notch innovation hub, Sanya has established 43 major seed industry research platforms, attracting numerous agricultural research institutions and university branches. The Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City has welcomed 1,225 high-level talents, providing solid support for Nanfan's research and innovation.
Sanya has also focused on enhancing living and production facilities, establishing a comprehensive service system for Nanfan in 2024.
Peng Jun, the secretary general of the Party committee and director of the National Nanfan Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said, "Thanks to the establishment of the Hainan Free Trade Port, Nanfan is gradually becoming a global center for agricultural breeding."
