Sanya's agricultural indicators top Hainan in Q1

Updated: english.sanya.gov.cn

According to the Sanya municipal bureau of agriculture and rural affairs, the first quarter's income level of Sanya's permanent rural residents ranked first in Hainan province.

From January to March, the added value of the city's primary industry was 5.06 billion yuan ($731 million), a year-on-year increase of 4.7 percent. The per capita disposable income of permanent rural residents here was 7,234 yuan, indicating an increase of 6.6 percent, which is 0.4 percentage points higher than the provincial average.

During this period, Sanya cultivated and then sold over 156,500 metric tons of vegetables. The prices of major agricultural products such as black-eyed peas, cucumbers, and balsam pears have increased anywhere between 15 percent and 60 percent year-on-year. This has effectively driven up the income of local farmers.

Currently, the planting area for okra in the city is about 15,000 mu (1,000 hectares), an increase of about 7,000 mu when compared to 2021, and their expected output value is set to reach 450 million yuan.

In terms of tropical fruits, Sanya's mango yield reached 188,600 tons, achieving a steady increase. By strengthening brand promotion, four batches of mangoes have already been exported to Canada and other countries this year. Additionally, Sanya has encouraged local farmers to plant more high-value cash crops, such as tropical fruits like durian, which is expected to hit the market by June.

In the first quarter, the output value of the animal husbandry sector in Sanya increased by 3.7 percent year-on-year, while the output value of its fisheries increased by 7.9 percent year-on-year, becoming a major force in helping farmers increase their income.

The overall prosperity of the city's tourism market has given rise to a large employment demand, which has also improved the livelihood of local rural residents.

Next, Sanya will focus on efficient agriculture with tropical characteristics. The city will promote the integration of its primary, secondary, and tertiary industries. It will also continue to develop five major areas, including the Nanfan breeding and cultivation base, as well as its tropical fruit industry, agricultural products, marine fisheries, and rural tourism.
