During the New Year Day holiday, which fell from Dec 31, 2022 to Jan 2, 2023, Hainan received over 1 million tourists, realizing a total tourism revenue of 1.5 billion yuan ($218 million). Hainan's tourist attractions received 451,900 guests. Its A-level tourist attractions welcomed 348,400 of them.
On the day of the opening and closing ceremony of the Hainan Island Carnival, the local cultural and tourism departments released 10 million yuan and 1 million yuan of tourism coupons respectively, which covered A-level tourist attractions and 1,349 hotels and constituted an important engine to stimulate consumption in the tourism culture market.
In coordination with the hot times of New Year's Day and New Year's Eve, tourism departments and enterprises launched colorful products and events. For example, Sanya held the 7th Sanya International Cultural Industry Fair from Dec 30, 2022 to Jan 2, 2023, and the Nanshan Intangible Cultural Heritage New Year Carnival on Dec 30.
According to the sampling survey, the average occupancy rate of Sanya tourist hotels on New Year's Eve exceeded 80 percent, and the occupancy rates of Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay exceeded 90 percent.
During the New Year holiday, the surrounding tourism draws are still the mainstream of the holiday market, while outdoor camping, rural tourism and picking (harvesting) have become popular for many residents on the island.
