Hainan achieves 1,500 kg/mu of hybrid rice yield in 2 years

Updated: ehainan.gov.cn

On Oct 13, Hainan announced that the average hybrid rice yield was 671.6 kilograms per mu (0.07 hectares) in a yield test conducted at Nanfan Public Experimental Base in Sanya's Yazhou district. As a result, the double cropping yield of this experimental field reached 1,581.6 kg per mu, meeting the target of 1,500 kg per mu.

"In the same experimental base, it is considered successful to achieve the target yield for two consecutive years," Yuan Dingyang, deputy director of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center, said.

Through the unremitting efforts of Nanfan's scientific researchers, Hainan has achieved the target goal put forward by Academician Yuan Longping for two consecutive years. As a result, Hainan can better screen new hybrid rice combinations with super high yield, strong disease resistance, as well as wide adaptability, and then promote them.

"Sanya and the major rice-producing countries in Southeast Asia have similar latitudes and climates, and achieving the goal of 1,500 kg per mu double cropping of hybrid rice has demonstration value for Southeast Asian countries," said Tu Shengbin, an associate researcher of the Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Through the test, varieties more suitable for tropical climate planting and with strong resistance were selected, while demonstration planting and promotion will be carried out in cooperation with foreign scientific research institutions and enterprises.
