Over the past decade, Hainan has promoted environmental protection and ecological civilization construction, which has laid a strong foundation for Hainan's green development.

In the past decade, the PM2.5 concentration in the province has decreased from about 25 micrograms per cubic meter to 13 micrograms per cu m. The centralized treatment rate of urban domestic sewage has increased from 75 percent to 99.6 percent, while the use of soil pesticides and fertilizers has decreased significantly. The proportion of the clean energy installed capacity in Hainan has increased from 43.5 percent to 70 percent, far higher than the national average.

During this period, Hainan has accumulated 2.6 million mu (173,333 hectares) of afforestation. In addition, Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park was selected to be part of the first batch of national parks and the population of Hainan gibbons increased to 36 across five groups.

At present, the province is building a national ecological civilization pilot zone and is promoting the construction of landmark projects, such as Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, clean energy island and clean energy vehicle promotion, as well as the construction of Boao Dongyu Island zero carbon demonstration zone.

In Hainan's key industrial parks, enterprises have adopted environmental protection, energy conservation, and low carbon standards. The province has also planned and promoted a number of high-quality projects with good sustainability and high comprehensive benefits.

The Hainan Free Trade Port Law notes that the Hainan FTP promotes the establishment of an ecological protection compensation mechanism, as well as encourages the use of market mechanisms to promote environmental protection and sustainable development.
