A recent notice from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced that Hainan's seven crop and agricultural microbial germplasm resource banks were listed as the national level, suggesting these germplasm resources will be further protected and utilized.
Six crop germplasm resource gardens in Hainan were selected as the first batch of 72 crop germplasm resource banks, including National Wild Cotton Germplasm Resource Garden (Sanya), National Tropical Forage Germplasm Resource Garden (Danzhou), National Rubber Germplasm Resource Garden (Danzhou), National Cassava Germplasm Resource Garden (Danzhou), National Tropical Palm Germplasm Resource Garden (Wenchang), as well as National Tropical Spice and Beverage Crop Germplasm Resource Garden (Wanning).
In addition, the National Fertilizer Microbial Germplasm Resource Bank (Hainan) became one of the 19 national agricultural microbial germplasm resource banks.
A national agricultural germplasm resource bank is an important facility for the safe preservation and shared utilization of germplasm resources. It undertakes important tasks, such as the collection, arrangement, preservation, and identification of germplasm resources.
According to the person in charge of the Institute of Tropical Crop Variety Resources, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, the three national germplasm resource gardens of the institute have collected 811 cassava germplasm resources, 860 tropical forage grass germplasm resources, as well as 354 mango germplasm resources.
In the future, the research team of the institute will build a technical system for evaluating germplasm resources, such as cassava, tropical forage grass, and mango. It will also improve the development and utilization efficiency and level of germplasm resources, laying a solid foundation for the revitalization of the seed industry.
