Overview of Haikou
Haikou, also known as the "Coconut City", located in the northern part of Hainan Island, is the capital city of Hainan province, a strategic pivot city in the Belt and Road Initiative and the core city of the Hainan Free Trade Port. It is the biggest transport hub on the island and the political, economic, technological, and cultural center of Hainan province.
Covering 3,119 square kilometers, Haikou has jurisdiction over the four districts of Xiuying, Longhua, Qiongshan, and Meilan, as well as 21 community streets, 22 towns, 211 communities, and 248 administrative villages. The city’s resident population is 2.3 million.
In 2020, its GDP reached 179.16 billion yuan ($27.34 billion), up 5.3 percent year-on-year. Major economic indicators saw growth and the city's economy recovered significantly with enhanced resilience and vitality.

As a national historical and cultural city, as well as a famous tropical coastal tourist destination, Haikou has many cultural attractions, such as the Five-lord Temple, Hairui Tomb, Qilou Old Street, Xiuying Fort, and Qiongtai Academy. Haikou Meilan International Airport operates a total of 280 routes, including 251 domestic routes, and newly-opened flights to many small and medium-sized cities such as Bazhong, Wushan, Sanming, Yulin, Yibin, Nanchong and Hechi, and Haikou’s accessibility to third- and fourth-tier cities continues to increase while coverage of the domestic airline network increasingly expands. In 2020, the airport hosted 128,800 flights with 16.49 million passengers.

Steady growth of tourism: The total tourism revenue in 2019 was 32.06 billion yuan, an increase of 7.6 percent over the previous year.
Rapid growth of convention and exhibition industry: In 2019, a total of 324 large conferences and exhibitions were held in Hainan, a 3 percent increase over the previous year.
Rapid growth of the medical industry: In 2019, the pharmaceutical industry above designated size achieved an output value of over 25.23 billion yuan, an increase of 3.6 percent.
Speedy development of the high-tech industry: 27 incremental tech companies were registered in 2019 and 314 tech contracts were signed with a total amount of over 559 million yuan.
