China has emerged as one of the major sources of investment and trading partners for Sri Lanka, according to Dilum Amunugama, state minister of Investment Promotion, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, at the 23rd China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT).
CIFIT, currently the only international investment promotion event in China focused on bilateral trade, serves as a golden opportunity for Sri Lanka to attract investors from all over the world.
"This is my first time attending the CIFIT. And I must say it's amazing. It contains great opportunities, especially for my country. And there is a lot that we can take back," said Amunugama.
Amunugama and his business delegation participated in the 2023 International Promotion Forum and the 5th Silk Road Maritime International Cooperation Forum at CIFIT.
"Most of our electrical and electronic items are imported from China to Sri Lanka. We have business connections particularly in the areas of shipping, maritime operations and investments. Our discussions with the people we met at the CIFIT have been productive," he added after delivering his keynote speech at the 5th Silk Road Maritime International Cooperation Forum.
China has been instrumental in assisting Sri Lanka in building infrastructure, resulting in significant economic benefits and contributions to local development. In exchange for this support, Sri Lanka has implemented favorable policies, such as a free port policy and tax incentives, for Chinese companies.
