Mariculture brings prosperity to Taizhou's Sanmen county

The annual output value of Sanmen small seafood has exceeded 6 billion yuan ($851.05 million).

There are more than 100,000 people engaged in industries related to small seafood in Sanmen county, Taizhou, East China's Zhejiang province, bringing in more than 10,000 yuan for farmers.

As the largest mariculture county in Zhejiang province, Sanmen has a shallow sea area of 590,000 mu (39,333 hectares), a tidal flat area of 210,000 mu, and a mariculture area of over 200,000 mu. It is rich in more than 100 kinds of small seafood, such as fish, shrimp, shellfish, algae and crabs.

Taotou village in Sanmen county has become rich from mariculture. This village was the pioneer of making the switch from planting to mariculture. The whole village is home to more than 11,700 mu of mariculture ponds and shallow mudflats.

Today, the output value of the entire village's mariculture industry has exceeded 200 million yuan, the collective income of the village has reached 14 million yuan, and the per capita annual income exceeds 120,000 yuan.

The e-commerce practitioners spawned by the small seafood industry in Sanmen are also seeing fuller pockets. Xie Bibo, a resident of Taotou village, has been selling crabs online for more than a decade, with average annual sales stable at 8 million to 10 million yuan in recent years.
