South China’s Guangdong province has recently issued a five-year plan for intellectual property protection and utilization, aiming to improve the IP quality and to strengthen IP environment.

According to the plan, the number of high-value invention patents per 10,000 people will reach 20 by 2025, the number of overseas invention patents will increase by 80,000, and the index for trademarks and brands will reach 90 points.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), the total amount of IP pledge financing (using IP assets like trademarks and patents to gain access to credit) reached 92.1 billion yuan ($14.38 billion), ranking first across the country.

The index for the province's comprehensive IP development and protection became the highest in the country for nine consecutive years, laying a solid foundation for the province to become a leading IP demonstration province during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025).

Guangdong’s IP pledge financing (using IP assets like trademarks and patents to gain access to credit) amounted to 92.1 billion yuan ($14.3 billion) during 2016-2020.

For years, Guangdong topped the country in the numbers of valid invention patents, accumulated PCT international patent applications and valid trademark registrations.

Guangdong's IP pledge financing will reach 250 billion yuan in 2025.

By 2025, the average ownership of high-value invention patents will reach 20 patents per 10,000 people, and the number of newly-added invention patents granted overseas will hit 80,000.
