The World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), held annually since its first conference in 2018, is co-hosted by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Cyberspace Administration of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the Shanghai municipal people's government.

The WAIC aims to promote the gathering and exchange of global AI innovation ideas, technology, applications, talents and capital, and to press ahead with the collaboration of global scientific and technological innovation, as well as help to build a world-class industrial cluster of AI.

The conference plans various forms of activities, builds an international cooperation and exchange platform, gathers together top scientists, entrepreneurs, government officials, experts and scholars, international organizations, investors, and start-up teams.

The WAIC 2021 was held from July 8 to 10, 2021, and combined offline and online activities.  A total of 108 forums were held, bringing together 1,261 speakers. Between 2020 to 2021, a total of 155 projects have been signed with a total investment of 110.7 billion yuan.
