FedEx Express, one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, announced the launch of four new intercontinental cargo flights on Monday originating from Asia Pacific (APAC), to meet growing demand from cross-border trade, according to the company's latest release.
“We are seeing the overall demand for exports from Asia Pacific fast recovering to pre-COVID levels,” said Kawal Preet, president of the Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa (AMEA) region at FedEx Express.
According to FedEx, three of the new flights will depart from its APAC Hub in Guangzhou, South China's Guangdong province, and reach cities in North America and Europe.
The four flights will provide improved connectivity, increased weekly capacity of almost 1,400 tons (1,390,000 kgs), and greater access to APAC customers along the trans-Pacific, intra-Asia, and European lanes, according to the company.
APAC is emerging as a mega marketplace with merchandise exports forecast to show a strong rebound of 13 percent YoY in 2021, with China’s exports in May enjoying a 27.9 percent YoY increase.
The first half year saw China’s total value of imports and exports of goods increase 27 percent YoY, while those involving cross-border e-commerce maintained the momentum with 28.6 percent YoY growth.
“China continues its momentum in facilitating global recovery. These new flights not only increase the competitiveness of Chinese enterprises, but also propel international exports from this region,” said Eddy Chan, senior vice president & president of FedEx China.
The company launched a cargo flight connecting Beijing and Anchorage in the US in mid July.
It currently operates more than 300 weekly flights in and out of the Chinese mainland.
