As a pilot city of circular and low-carbon economy, and one of the country's first new energy vehicle (NEV) promotion pilot cities, Shenzhen has been leading China and even the world in the promotion and application of NEVs in recent years.

On June 24, Shenzhen launched China's first pure-electric heavy-duty truck commercial operation project, which includes an innovation center, automakers and freight companies that will jointly explore heavy-duty truck electrification technology and business models. With this, Shenzhen plans to realize wide application of electric heavy-duty trucks in port transportation. Electric dump trucks have been widely promoted in construction project transportation since December 2018.

As of the end of 2019, Shenzhen had 362,800 NEVs, or 9.52 percent of the total in China, while more than 72,000 new energy logistics vehicles had been sold and were in use in the city, the highest concentration of such vehicles in the world.

With the development of NEV technology application of NEVs has expanded from buses, taxis, logistics vehicles and private cars to heavy-duty special vehicles with higher technical requirements, including sanitation vehicles and heavy-duty trucks. Shenzhen plans to sell about 50 electric heavy-duty trucks in 2020.
