Overview

Henan, lying on the middle-lower reaches of the Yellow River, covers a total area of 167,000 square kilometers. It borders Anhui Province and Shandong Province in the east, Hebei Province and Shanxi Province in the north, Shaanxi province in the west and Hubei Province in the south. It has 18 cities under its direct jurisdiction, with Zhengzhou as its capital. As one of the earliest developed regions in the country, it was a political, cultural and business hub in ancient China.

Henan is influenced by the continental monsoon climate and has four distinct seasons. It is rainy and hot in summer, cold and dry in winter and windy in spring. The province has a mean annual temperature of 10.5-16.7℃ increasing from north to south, an annual frost-free period of 6-8 months, and a mean annual precipitation of 407.7-1295.8 mm, also increasing from north to south.

In 2018, Henan generated a GDP of 4.81 trillion yuan ($684.14 billion), a year-on-year growth of 7.6 percent. Added primary industry value totaled 428.94 billion yuan, up 3.3 percent; secondary industry saw a gain of 2.2 trillion yuan, rising 7.2 percent, and tertiary industry registered 2.17 trillion yuan, a growth of 9.2 percent. 

The province saw 217 newly registered foreign-invested enterprises in 2018 and the paid-in foreign capital increased to $17.9 billion. Import and export value totaled 550 billion yuan, ranking 11th in the country.

Pillar Industries

Henan has seized the opportunity to promote supply-side structural reform in recent years and reform and innovation have served as engines for the high-quality growth of the province. Pillar industries like food, high-end equipment manufacturing, electronic information and medicine have showcased Henan’s economic momentum.

High-end equipment manufacturing industry

Equipment manufacturing plays a major role in Henan’s industry and has disseminated the brand “Made in Henan”. In 2016, equipment manufacturing companies above the designated size in Zhengzhou achieved an added-value of 38.5 billion yuan, responsible for 4.3 percent of the capital’s economic growth. Driven by the “Made in China” 2025 strategy, Henan plans to upgrade its advanced sectors like power and mining equipment, accelerate the emerging ones such as numerical control machines, robots and energy conservation equipment and cultivate leading enterprises and research institutions. By the end of 2020, revenue of the enterprises above the designated size in the manufacturing industry is projected to reach 2 trillion yuan, with an annual growth rate of 11.5 percent.

Electronic Information Industry

In 2017, nineteen companies in Henan were listed as nationwide excellent enterprises in the electronic industry. Henan has targeted a green, high-end, intelligent and integrated electronic information industry and made great efforts to expedite its dominant sectors including intelligent terminals, electronic materials and new batteries while optimizing its characteristic sectors like automobile electronics, cloud computing and big data, photoelectronics, information security and software and IT service. By the end of 2020, the industry is expected to generate revenue in trillions of yuan.

Food industry

Henan has long cultivated the food industry as its economic growth pole. It has made enormous strides in accelerating its competitive sectors including meat, flour, milk, fruit and vegetables and in upgrading and transforming the green food sector. In 2017, revenue in the food industry amounted to 1.24 trillion yuan, ranking top two in all the industries in the province. A total of 7,986 food processing enterprises above the designated size reported 2.36 trillion yuan, responsible for 11.6 percent of national growth in the sector.

Medicine industry

Henan has endeavored to increase growth in its medicine industry. In accordance with the development plan published in 2016, the province focuses on chemical pharmaceuticals, biological medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and medical equipment. By the end of 2020, revenue in the medicine industry is expected to exceed 400 billion yuan at an annual growth rate of 15 percent. Two biological medicine bases will be set up and each is expected to see gains of over 50 billion yuan.

Advantages

Henan’s economic volume has ranked first among those of the provinces and regions in the central and western region and among the top five in China for consecutive years. As an economic heavyweight with many advantages, it is a good destination for foreign investors.   

Superior geographical location and transportation

Located at the intersection of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, Henan links industrial transfer from the east region, resource output from the west region and trade exchanges between the north and south regions. Capitalizing on its geographical advantages, the province is currently accelerating the high-speed railway network and forming an air transportation hub with the capital Zhengzhou as the center. Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airporthas been approved as the only international express supervision center in Central China and the first airport to conduct a bonded aviation fuel business.

Abundant natural resources

Henan is blessed with a wealth of natural resources. This central province embraces diverse landforms like plains, basins and hills, which provides good conditions for integrated growth in agriculture, forestry, husbandry and fisheries. Henan is also rich in mineral reserves. By the end of 2017, a total of 144 kinds of minerals had been found in the province. Its reserves of coal, petrol and natural gas lead the country, constituting a solid foundation for industrial development.

Huge market potential

By the end 2017, the population of Henan province had reached 108.52 million. With that base and its huge economic volume, Henan has seen growing consumer demands and broad investment space. The rising city cluster of Zhengzhou, Luoyang and Kaifeng also improves resource allocation, market integration, talent utilization and mutual cooperation, bringing significant vitality to the province and Central China.
