Guangyuan Economic and Technological Development Zone was founded in August 1993 and was upgraded to a national-level economic and technological development zone in Dec 11, 2012 by the State Council.

As a comprehensive transport hub in southwestern China, the zone, some 1.5 kilometers from Guangyuan's downtown area, covers a planning area of 22.7 square kilometers and expands some 103 square kilometers. It is honored as "A Demonstration Base for China's New Industries" and "A High-Tech Industrial Base for China's Advanced Electronic Devices and Supporting Materials".

By the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15) period, the zone had built Wangjiaying industrial park, Yuanjiaba industrial park and Tashanwan military-civil integration industrial park. During the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), the zone focused on developing biological medicine, the mechanical and electrical industry, new materials and the food and beverage industry.

In 2018, the gross industrial output value of the zone reached 36 billion yuan ($5.35 billion), an annual increase of 18.5 percent, accounting for one third of the city's total. The zone has planned five over 10-billion industrial bases and 276 projects with a total investment of 176.7 billion yuan. By 2020, its gross industrial output value is expected to reach 35 billion yuan.
