Chongqing Economic and Technological Development Zone, the earliest national-level economic and technological development zone in western China was set up in 1993 with the approval from the State Council.

The zone is surrounded by mountains on three sides and near the Yangtze River. It boasts convenient transportation and has access to several urban transits.

The zone has three dominant industries -- electronic information, advanced equipment manufacturing and modern service. It has attracted noted companies including Midea and software enterprise Iflytek.

The zone has planned China's second oil and gas transaction platform -- the Chongqing Petroleum and Gas Exchange. It also boasts opening-up platforms such as the Yinglong business district and a bonded logistics center. The zone saw its GDP reach 27.8 billion yuan ($4.1 billion) in 2017.

The zone developed the big data industry greatly in recent years and became home to several national-level platforms including the West China Branch of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

It aims to become a demonstration zone for internationalization of the business environment and an area featuring entrepreneurship and innovation.
