Set up in November 1993, Suzhou Wuzhong Economic and Technological Development Zone was among the first batch of provincial economic development zones approved by Jiangsu Provincial People's Government. In December 2012, it was upgraded to a national-level zone with the approval of the State Council.

In 2018, the zone determined its own industrial plan, featuring three leading industries and three distinctive industries. The zone's three leading industries are intelligent equipment manufacturing, new generation of information technology and biopharmaceuticals. Its three distinctive industries are parts for new energy automobiles, inspection and detection, and electronic trade.

In 2017, Suzhou Wuzhong Economic and Technological Development Zone achieved a regional GDP of 39.95 billion yuan ($5.88 billion), up 11.9 percent year-on-year, and the total output of industries above designated size reached 71.4 billion yuan, up 17.8 percent year-on-year.
