Approved to be launched by the State Council in April 2000, Xiamen Export Processing Zone is a special zone supervised by the General Administration of Customs of China, lying in the southern part of Haicang development zone, Xiamen, Fujian province. It covers 2.4 square kilometers and was officially opened in September 2002.

It is only 1.5 km from Haicang Port Zone, 10 km from Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport and 3 km from Haicang Railway Station. The neighboring Haicang Port adds to its advantages in ocean shipping as the port is a key pilot direct shipping port between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. International routes to Europe, the United States, Australia and national routes to Fuzhou, the capital of the province, and Shanghai have been launched at the port. Capable of accommodating 36 10,000-ton level berths, the port has an annual throughput of 70 to 90 million tons.

Like many export processing zones, this zone enjoys preferential policies such as duty-free or bonded imports and exports and tax refunds. The zone encourages export development in advanced technologies, including electronic information, biopharmaceuticals, fine chemicals and precision machinery.
