Dongshan Economic and Technological Development Zone in Dongshan county, Zhangzhou, Fujian province, lies between the economic zones of Xiamen and Shantou and is the nearest port to Taiwan.
The zone was approved to be set up in January 1993 as one of five national-level economic and technological zones in the province with a planned area of 10 square kilometers.
It has now basically formed the pattern of “one base and three industrial parks”, featuring the industries of photovoltaic glass, marine creative culture and marine biotechnology. Products from firms in the zone are sold to the United States, European countries, Japan and South Korea.
At present, the zone vigorously promotes the construction of industrial parks specializing in photovoltaic glass and marine biotechnology, which are expected to realize output values of 20 billion yuan (about $3 billion) and 36 billion yuan, and create 2 billion yuan and 1 billion yuan in tax revenue respectively.
