In September 2015, the State Council approved the establishment of a national innovation demonstration zone in the hi-tech development zones of Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing.

The Pearl River Delta National-independently Innovative Demonstration Zone mainly draws on resources from Shenzhen and Guangzhou, with seven other cities in the Pearl River Delta acting as their support.

In 2005, the GDP of the Pearl River Delta region reached 6.2 trillion yuan, accounting for more than 9 percent of the country's total. 

With the most advanced modern industrial and supporting systems in China, the region has formed an advanced electronic and information industry cluster on the east coast of the Pearl River and an advanced equipment manufacturing industry cluster on the west coast. Their output values exceed 2 trillion yuan and 1 trillion yuan, respectively. 

The demonstration zone has 10,560 high-tech enterprises with a total output value of more than 5 trillion yuan.
