The Zhuhai Free Trade Zone (FTZ), covering 3 square kilometers, was founded in 1996 with State Council approval. Its administrative committee was set up in June 1997. By the end of 2016, over 1,000 companies had registered in the zone (which includes the Zhuhai-Macao Cross-Border Industrial Park), nearly 400 of which were foreign-funded or joint ventures. 

At present, Zhuhai Free Trade Zone has formed an industrial system with 66 industries, including bonded processing, bonded logistics and international trade. The enterprises in the FTZ can enjoy certain preferential policies in areas such as customs supervision, foreign exchange management, and taxation

Nowadays, businesses operating in Zhuhai FTZ include aviation maintenance and training, precision processing, electronic component manufacturing, pharmaceutical and medical apparatus manufacturing, and modern logistics. 

The FTZ's economy has been growing rapidly. In 2016, for example, it achieved regional GDP of 1.2 billion yuan ($172.87 million), total industrial output value of 8.8 billion yuan, total logistics value of 18.3 billion yuan, and total import and export value of $930 million.
