The Songshan Lake National Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone in Dongguan, Guangdong province was established with the approval of the State Council in September 2010. With a total area of 103 square kilometers, it has an 8 sq km lake, 6.5 sq km wetlands and a 14 sq km ecological green land, with a green coverage of more than 60 percent.

The Songshan Lake National Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone currently ranks 23rd in terms of comprehensive strength among national high-tech zones, and ranks third among Guangdong's high-tech zones.

The development zone has cultivated 253 national high-tech enterprises, 35 incubation centers, 62 engineering technology R&D centers above municipal level, and 41 key laboratories above municipal level. In total, 56 percent of industrial enterprises above designated size have established R&D centers in the development zone.

The zone has formed an industrial system with high-end electronic information, biomedicine, robotics, new energy and the modern service industry as the main body of services, and introduced Huawei, East Group, Shengyi Technology Co and other industry-leading enterprises.

In 2017, the development zone achieved a gross domestic product of 38.61 billion yuan ($5.56 billion), a year-on-year increase of 13.8 percent. The total tax revenue was 14.81 billion yuan, up 47 percent year-on-year. The industries above designated scale yielded a total output value of 303.98 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 18 percent, and the added value of industries above designated size was 33.27 billion yuan, up 18 percent year-on-year.
