Covering an area of 3 square kilometers, Shenzhen Export Processing Zone is located in Shantou, Guangdong province and was established with the approval of the Guangdong provincial government in 1993.

Shantou Hi-tech Development Zone has formed four leading industries: the high-end equipment manufacturing industry, characterized by light industrial machinery and equipment; the high-end electronic information industry, characterized by intelligent terminals; the new materials industry, characterized by the industry of fine chemicals and polymer materials; and modern service industry, characterized by e-commerce, research and development design.

The private economy is well developed in the hi-tech zone. According to its official website, 90 percent of the total 281 enterprises in the zone are private enterprises, among which nine are large listed companies.

There are more than 70 enterprises with an output value exceeding 100 million yuan ($14.4 million) and two enterprises with an output value exceeding 1 billion yuan. The number of listed enterprises in the hi-tech zone ranks first in Guangdong province and has a financing scale of over 5 billion yuan.

A total of 7,466 new market entities entered Shantou Hi-tech Zone in 2014. The gross industrial output value was 63.94 billion yuan and the added value of industries was 14.95 billion yuan, accounting for 17.4 percent and 18.3 percent of the city’s total respectively. The foreign trade value reached $1.36 billion, an increase of 8.5 percent.
