Foshan High-tech Industrial Development Zone was established with the approval of the State Council in December 1992. It integrated six main industrial parks in the city in 1998 and implemented a new management mode in 2012 ensuring five parks in the zone – Nanhai, Shunde, Chancheng, Gaoming and Sanshui parks – conducted unified planning, respective management, and innovative services. The new management model has strengthened their industrial features and cohesive force.

Foshan High-tech Zone is mainly composed of the real economy and private economy. At present, it has formed high-tech industrial clusters for automobile and parts manufacturing, high-end equipment manufacturing, optoelectronics, new materials, smart appliances, as well as some in other fields.

It has built several characteristic industrial parks, including Guangdong Intelligent Manufacturing Demonstration Base, Guangdong Biomedical Industrial Base, and China-Europe Science and Technology Cooperation Industrial Park. Currently, Foshan High-tech Zone has 91 global Top 500 investment enterprises, 74 listed companies, and 1,014 high-tech enterprises.

The region's GDP in 2017 was 145.4 billion yuan ($20.95 billion), an increase of 9 percent year-on-year. Total industrial output value reached 4,141 billion yuan, an increase of 8.8 percent, and total tax payment was 19.5 billion yuan, an increase of 8.9 percent.
