The Zhuhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone was one of the first national hi-tech zones, and was approved by the State Council in 1992. At present, the Zhuhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone covers 369 square kilometers with a permanent population of 124,000. It integrates the main park in Tanjiawan town with several other parks, including Nanping Sci-tech Industrial Park, Sanzao Industrial Park, Xinqing Industrial Park, Fushan Industrial Park, Aviation Industry Park, and Hengqin International Hi-Tech Innovation Park.

In 2017, there were 127 above-scale enterprises, 352 high-tech enterprises, 40 listed enterprises and some enterprises that debuted on China's National Equities Exchange and Quotations (NEEQ). Major economic indicators for the zone continued to maintain double-digit growth in 2017 with regional GDP reaching 21.459 billion yuan ($3.09 billion), a year-on-year increase of 10.5 percent, and above-scale industrial added value reaching 10.66 billion yuan, up 11 percent.

In addition, investment in fixed assets was 12.34 billion yuan, an increase of 22.8 percent; the actual utilization of foreign capital was $200 million, an increase of 3.2 percent; foreign trade value was 37.68 billion yuan, up 74 percent; and the income of the general public budget was 1.62 billion yuan, up 11.6 percent.

The total industrial output value of Zhuhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone was 240 billion yuan, an increase of 8 percent, and the output value of 660 new high-tech enterprises was 192 billion yuan, an increase of 14 percent.
