Zhenjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone was set up in May 1992 and upgraded to State level in April 2010. It lies on the eastern side of Jiangsu's Zhenjiang city, covering 223 square kilometers with a permanent population of 221,300.

During the development of Jiangsu's coastal areas at the end of the 20th century, the zone introduced two leading companies to promote local traditional industries, namely Golden East Paper in paper production and Chi Mei Corporation, which produces plastic and rubber materials.

Since 2009, the zone has carried out continuous efforts to develop emerging industries, covering aeronautics and astronautics, new materials and new energy.

In the first half of 2018, the area achieved a regional GDP of 35.25 billion yuan ($5.07 billion) and its general public budget revenue reached 2.74 billion yuan. A total of 1,108 business entities settled in the zone during this period with registered capital reaching 14.24 billion yuan.
