Changshu New and Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, founded in 2003, became a provincial-level hi-tech zone in 2011 and was upgraded to a national-level one in September 2015.

The zone's economic strength and scientific and technological innovation capacities have been keeping rising fast since its establishment. It was one of the development zones in Jiangsu with the fastest developing speed and was awarded the titles of the "Most Valuable Development Zone of Investment in the Yangtze River Delta" for three times and the "Top 10 Development Zones of Service Outsourcing in China" for four times.

It also founded the Changshu University Science and Technology Park in 2010, which is the first national-level university scientific and technological park settled in a county-level city, to help gather advanced technical resources and high-caliber talents. Some 140 innovative science and technology enterprises have been attracted the zone by the end of 2015.

Industries of automobile and auto-parts, high-end equipment manufacturing, electronic information, and hi-tech services have also been initially formed in the zone before 2015.

Up to now, it has attracted more than 900 projects from over 20 countries and regions, including the ones invested by Toyota Motor Corporation, Mitsubishi Motors and Hitachi Group. Its revenue in the general public budgets in 2017 totaled 2.66 billion yuan ($385.54 million), a year-on-year increase of 23.87 percent.
