Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone, founded under the approval of the State Council on March 7, 2013, is the first national airport economy comprehensive pilot area in China.

With a planning area of 415 square kilometers, it is also a comprehensive transportation hub integrating airplanes, high-speed trains, inter-city trains, subways and buses, the first renminbi products innovation pilot area in the Chinese mainland, and the first innovation and entrepreneurship demonstration area in Henan province.

In 2017, the zone's GDP totaled 70.01 billion yuan ($10.15 billion), 3.4 times compared to that of 2012, with an average annual growth rate of 19.4 percent. The total value added of tenant enterprises each with an annual industrial output value above 20 million yuan reached 29.53 billion yuan, 4.1 times that of 2012, with an average annual growth rate of 22.2 percent.

Revenue in the general public budgets was 3.63 billion yuan, quintuple that of 2012, with an average annual growth rate of 37.9 percent. The fixed-assets investment reached 68.05 billion yuan, 5.9 times that of 2012, with an average annual growth rate of 42.4 percent. The total export-import volume was 49.81 billion US dollars, 1.8 times that of 2012, with an average annual growth rate of 12.2 percent and respectively accounting for 65.1 percent of the province's total and 83.5 percent of the city's total.

The air passenger volume reached 24.3 million in 2017, 2.1 times compared to that of 2012, with an average annual growth rate of 15.8 percent, while the air cargo volume was 503,000 metric tons, 3.3 times compared to that of 2012, with an average annual growth rate of 27.2 percent.
