Founded in 1988, the Nanning Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone was upgraded to a State-level hi-tech zone under the approval of the State Council in 1992. With a planning area of 163.41 square kilometers, the hi-tech zone also covers the Nanning Comprehensive Bonded Zone.

The zone is on the list of the second batch of state-level demonstration bases for mass entrepreneurship and innovation, which was announced by the State Council on June 21, 2017. The zone is the first of its kind in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

It prioritizes the development of information technology, health and intelligent manufacturing industries, and also actively develops the strategic emerging industries and the modern service industry.

More than 6,000 enterprises have presently settled down in the zone, including 131 companies with an annual industrial output value above 20 million yuan ($2.90 million) concerning information technology, health and intelligent manufacturing industries, 183 companies with an annual output value of more than 100 million yuan, 56 enterprises of emerging industries, and 179 hi-tech enterprises.

The zone's invention patent applications and authorizations take up more than 40 percent of the city's total, and its valid invention patents account for 54.65 percent of the city's. The number of innovative enterprises of different types, enterprises with intellectual property advantages and high-tech enterprises are also increasing at a rapid rate.
