Changshu Economic and Technological Development Zone (CEDZ), founded in August 1992, was selected among the first batch of the Jiangsu provincial-level development zones in 1993 and was upgraded to a national-level one by the State Council in November 2010.

Covering a total area of 71 square kilometers, CEDZ has been developed into a development zone with the industrial park along the Yangtze River and Changshu Free Trade Zone as its core by virtue of its superior geographic location and convenient transportation.

In 2016, CEDZ's GDP reached 82.81 billion yuan ($12 billion), its total industrial output value was 260.4 billion yuan, and the sales revenue of industrial products amounted to 253.7 billion yuan. The fiscal revenue was 14.57 billion yuan, including the revenue in the general public budgets 6.76 billion yuan. The fixed-asset investment totaled 26.68 billion yuan, covering 17.73-billion-yuan input into industry. The total export-import volume was 11.56 billion dollars, of which 7.19 billion dollars was the amount of exports.

Up to now, it has been home to more than 600 companies with foreign investment from 20 countries and regions. There are 61 projects invested by 28 Fortune Global 500 companies, 50 projects with investment exceeding 100 million US dollars, and five projects investing 10 billion dollars in the zone. The total foreign investment has reached 30.8 billion dollars and the registered foreign capital is 13.41 billion dollars.
