Changchun New Area was founded in 2016 by the State Council as an important part of the Changjitu program, a combination of the city names of Changchun and Jilin along with Tumen in the Yanbian Korean autonomous prefecture.

With a planned area of some 499 square meters, the new area covers the Changchun National Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, Changde National Economic and Technical Development Zone, and Changchun Airport Economic Development Zone.

It has formed industrial clusters of advanced equipment manufacturing, biomedicine, new material, new energy and modern service. The output value of its emerging and hi-tech industries maintains an annual growth rate of more than 20 percent in the recent three years.

During the period of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15), the area's total revenue reached 340 billion yuan ($49.28 billion) and the industrial output value was 304 billion yuan. The fixed-asset investment totaled 41.8 billion yuan and the fiscal revenue amounted to 40.9 billion yuan. The actual utilized foreign capital was 1.53 billion yuan in total, with an average annual increase of 18.44 percent.
