Xiamen Torch High-tech Industrial Development Zone was jointly established by the former State Scientific and Technological Commission and the Xiamen municipal government in December 1990. It was promoted to national level in March 1991, as one of the three "torch" high-tech zones in China.
The zone is home to six major industries including flat panel display, computer and communication equipment, power electronics, software and information services, microelectronics and integrated circuits, LED, as well as new and emerging industries including biomedicine, new materials, new energy and cultural creation.
In 2017, the growth rate of Xiamen Torch High-tech Industrial Development Zone’s industrial value-added was 2.4 percentage points higher than that of the city’s GDP.
The output value of high-tech industries reached 199.36 billion yuan ($31.29 billion), accounting for 82 percent of the zone’s total output value.
Its total industrial net profit increased by 52 percent, 30 percentage points compared to the growth rate of Xiamen's.
The zone's total exports grew by 18.7 percent year-on-year to surpass 52 billion yuan, a growth rate of 13.2 percentage points higher than that of the city.
The zone’s Software Park, which is home to 3,300 enterprises, generated revenue of 83.87 billion yuan in 2017, up by 19.6 percent year-on-year. It has more than fulfilled the expansion plan of the Software Park with over 1,000 companies and 12,000 employees settling down and achieving a revenue of 12.5 billion.
At present, it houses seven industrial parks -- Xiamen Science and Technology Innovation Park, Xiang’an Industrial Park, Tong’an Xiang’an High-tech Industrial Base, Torch Huli Park, Peking University Bio-tech Park, an innovation and entrepreneurship park and a software park.
