The establishment of the national-level Hangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved by the State Council in 1993. It is the only national development zone housing industrial parks, higher education zones, and export processing zones.
Hangzhou ETDZ attaches importance to the development of five advanced manufacturing industries, including semiconductors, life and health, intelligent automobiles and intelligent equipment, aerospace, and new materials, as well as five modern services industries, including R&D and testing, e-commerce, fintech, software information, and cultural tourism.
By the end of 2020, more than 1,400 foreign-funded enterprises had been established in the zone, with a total investment of over 70 billion US dollars. There were 75 projects invested in by the world's top 500 enterprises. Well-known enterprises include MSD, Abbott, Johnson & Johnson, Siemens, Panasonic, and Toshiba.
Hangzhou ETDZ will focus on its pillar industries and innovation, and endeavor to build itself into a world-class intelligent manufacturing industrial cluster, a demonstration zone for industry-city integration in the Yangtze River Delta region, and a pilot area for the integrated innovative development of the digital economy and high-end manufacturing in Hangzhou Bay.
