The Weihai International Port Economic and Technological Development District was upgraded to be a national economic and technological development zone in November 2013 with the approval of the State Council.Located in the middle of Weihai city, the zone is the most dynamic area in terms of economic growth and urban expansion in the city. It is accessible to three international airports and five national first-class open ports within two hours. As Shandong province was identified as a key region for the Belt and Road initiative and the New Eurasian Continental Bridge Economic Corridor, Weihai enjoys outstanding advantages as a transit hub for maritime shipping in Northeast Asia.The zone prioritizes the development of new materials and applications, electromechanical equipment manufacturing, electronic information, biomedical food, sports and recreation industries.Currently, there are 107 industrial enterprises above a designated size. Famous companies include HOYA Corporation, Marquardt Group, Shandong Weida Group, Shandong Horan Super Engineering Plastics Co Ltd, and Weihai Joyall Tyre Co Ltd.The district is rising as a top business destination for foreign companies. It has been ramping up efforts to promote higher-level opening-up and build opening-up platforms. It has strengthened the construction of the Sino-European and Sino-Japanese Industrial Parks, which are to serve as signboards, to attract foreign investment.In the future, Weihai International Port Economic and Technological Development District will pay attention to both industrial development and urbanization progress. It will accelerate the transformation from a single industrial park to a modern industrial city with distinctive industrial features and perfect urban functions.

The Weihai International Port Economic and Technological Development District in Shandong province, founded in 2005, became a provincial-level development zone in March 2006 and was upgraded to a national-level one under the approval of the State Council in November 2013.
