The central government decided to set up two economic development zones with special economic policies in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in 2010. One of the zones was set up in Khorgos.
The Khorgos Economic Development Zone is located in the Ili Kazakh autonomous prefecture of Xinjiang with a planned area of about 73 square kilometers. As an important stage on the Silk Road, Khorgos has been the most convenient port linking China with Central Asia, West Asia and Europe. It has been a hub of the Land Bridge of Asia and Europe.
With intensive processing of agricultural and sideline products, textile and garment, modern equipment manufacturing, medical and health care, and precious metals and new materials processing as the five largest industries, this zone is oriented towards the real economy. It focuses on the import, export and processing trade, supported by advanced technological and financial innovation and rich human resources.
Based on these five pillar industries, this zone introduced the producer and consumer services, and promotes the development of its well-coordinated export-oriented industrial systems.
With the preferential policies granted by the country, Khorgos will continue to build itself into an optimal business center with the simplest procedures, the lowest cost and the highest efficiency in Xinjiang. Its aim is to foster a friendly environment for all kinds of enterprises here.
