Changji National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, formerly known as Changji Economic and Technological Development Zone when established in 1992, was a provincial zone in 2000. It was approved as a State-level HIDZ by the State Council in September 2010.
Located in the Silk Road economic belt and in the strategic area of the "Urumqi-Changji-Shihezi" city agglomeration, the zone is 49 kilometers away from the Urumqi downtown and 38 kilometers away from the airport. It is not only an important transportation hub connecting Xinjiang with the other parts of China but also a key link with Central Asia, West Asia and European markets.
The zone is rich in high-value crops and mineral resources such as cotton, wheat, rice, sugar, oil, natural gas, iron, copper and gold. It has ample reserves of coal, nonferrous metals, oil and natural gas.
By now, 466 enterprises have been registered in the zone, including 73 enterprises above designated size, two listed companies, and 43 enterprises with annual sales revenue exceeding 100 million yuan. Leading companies include TBEA, Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group, Xinjiang Blue Ridge Tunhe Sci & Tech, Xinjiang Xinlv Aluminum, Maiquer Group, Liwayway (China), Hangzhou Wahaha Group, and Beijing Huiyuan Beverage and Food Group.
Changji HIDZ has initially formed three major industrial clusters of advanced equipment manufacturing industry, new materials, and biotechnology. The industrial output value of the three industries accounts for 75 percent of the total industrial output.
