Beihai High-Tech Industrial Development Zone was upgraded as a national-level high-tech industrial zone by the State Council on Feb 5, 2015.

The zone has adopted a "one district and multiple parks" development strategy featuring software, power electronics, marine organisms, e-commerce, cultural creation, outsourcing services and the Internet, covering an area of 25.4 square kilometers.

In recent years, the zone has sped up its pace in creating a more innovative business environment for enterprises. It is home to some 50 percent of the high-tech enterprises in the city, with a national-level incubator for high-tech enterprises, a demonstration zone for China's e-commerce industries, a demonstration park for cultural industries and an innovation and entrepreneurship base for young people.

By the end of September 2018, the zone had attracted a total of 206 high-tech enterprises, with actual investment reaching 950 million yuan ($141.16 billion), up 34.56 percent year-on-year. Its above-scale industrial output value hit some 2.6 billion yuan, an annual increase of 9.04 percent.
