Huangshi Economic & Technological Development Area was established in 1992 under the approval of Hubei provincial government. It was ungraded to a national economic and technological development area in 2010. It has a planned area of 460 sq km.

In recent years, the development zone has devoted much energy to developing three strategic emerging industries, namely, electronic information, advanced equipment manufacturing and biomedicine, and has achieved rapid growth in its economic strength.

Huangshi has convenient transportation and logistics conditions. The Shanghai-Chongqing, Fuzhou-Yinchuan, Daqing-Guangzhou and Hangzhou-Ruili expressways, as well as the 106 and 306 National Highways run through the city. By taking the Wuhan-Huangshi Expressway, it takes only 40 minutes to commute between the two cities. The Wuhan-Huangshi-Jiujiang Railway has connected the city with the nation's major railway lines, such as the Beijing-Guangzhou and Beijing-Kowloon lines. The Wuhan-Huangshi High-Speed Railway has shortened the travel time between the two cities to 30 minutes. Huangshi's ports along the Yangtze River can berth vessels up to 5,000 tons. It takes about a 70-minute drive to the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport.
