Dongying Economical and Technological Development Zone was established in Dec 1992 and elevated to the state level in March 2010. It is also a national pilot zone for copper material and recyclable production.

Located in the intersection between the Yellow River Delta and the Shandong Peninsula, Dongying Economical and Technological Development Zone is a key economic hub connecting the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Economic Area and the Central Plains Economic Region. It is one of the most promising areas along China's eastern coast due to its abundant resources and convenient transportation.

The zone consists of four industrial parks and three industrial clusters. Its signature industries include finance, nonferrous metals, new materials, automobile manufacturing, petroleum equipment, and electronic information. Finance, e-commerce, headquarter economy, and other tertiary sectors contributed to 22.3 percent to the zone's GDP growth.

In 2017, the GDP of Dongying Economical and Technological Development Zone was 40.27 billion yuan, up 6.6 percent year on year. The industrial output totaled 169.92 billion yuan, a 7.5 percent increase. Among the 78 enterprises above designated size, those with annual sales of more than 5 million yuan, or $744,371, there are 36 certified national high-tech enterprises and two top 500 Chinese enterprises.
