In January 2015, the State Council granted approval to Jiaxing Export Processing Zone's upgrade into a comprehensive bonded zone. It was opened in December 2016 and later merged into Jiaxing Port Area.
The comprehensive bonded zone is located in Jiaxing Port Area with a planned area of 1.33 square kilometers. Focusing on bonded industries, including bonded processing, logistics and trade, it enjoys a series of preferential policies granted by the central government.
Jiaxing Port Area is located in the economically developed area of the Yangtze River Delta, in the southern wing of Shanghai and the northern bank of Hangzhou Bay. It is one of the two development zones of Jiaxing City, with management area of 54 sq km and a population of about 100,000. It is a national first-class open port and also the only estuary in the northern region of Zhejiang. The Shanghai-Hangzhou, Hangpu and Yujiasu expressways and Hangzhou Bay Bridge connect the zone to various major southern cities.
In 2017, the port area realized GDP of 16.08 billion yuan ($2.38 billion) a year-on-year increase of 12.8 percent. It completed general public budget income of 1.5 billion yuan, an increase of 18.2 percent, and fixed assets investment of 7.75 billion yuan, an increase of 18.2 percent. The industrial output value of enterprises above designated size realized 59.99 billion yuan and the industrial added value totaled 12.60 billion yuan. A domestic capital of 1.35 billion yuan was introduced to the area.
