In 2001, with the construction of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, Zhejiang Cixi Economic Development Zone was founded. In April 2015, Cixi Economic and Technological Development Zone was renamed Ningbo Hangzhou Bay New Area.

Located in the northern part of Ningbo city, Zhejiang province, to the south of the bridge, it is adjacent to Shanghai, Ningbo, Hangzhou, Suzhou and other metropolises.

The planned land area of the whole district is 356 square kilometers, with a resident population of more than 230,000. Its two-hour traffic circle covers China's most densely populated areas with the fastest economic development and the highest living standard. It also has four international airports and two major ports.

The automobile industry here is taking shape with two major projects, Volkswagen and Geely, and more than 100 automobile supporting enterprises. The development of the smart home appliance industry has accelerated by attracting 25 companies including Fangtai. Also, a strategic partnership has been established with Shenzhen Mobile Phone Industry Association to cultivate the local mobile terminal industry. The high-performance new materials and high-end equipment industries are also making steady progresses.

In 2017, the annual production value of the district was 45 billion yuan ($6.67 billion), up by 15 percent year-on-year; total industrial output value reached 157.03 billion yuan, a year-on-year growth of 20.1 percent, of which the industrial output value of enterprises above designated size totaled 139.47 billion yuan. Forty-nine projects with a total investment of 46.96 billion yuan were launched in the district.
