Qingdao Qianwan Free Trade Port Zone in Shandong province, founded in September 2008 under the approval of the State Council, was upgraded from the former Qingdao Free Trade Zone established in 1992. It has a planning area of 9.72 square kilometers.

As the eighth free trade port zone established in China, the zone is the only one which is built by integrating a free trade zone, a bonded logistics park and nearby ports. It has nine main functions: warehouse logistics, foreign trade, international purchase, sales and distribution, international transit, testing and after-sales maintenance services, product exhibition, port operation, research and development, and processing and manufacturing. 

Since July 2011, the zone has successively set up several function zones in Zhucheng in Weifang, Leling in Dezhou, Zoucheng in Jining, Yishui in Linyi, Mudan district of Heze, and Xintai in Tai'an. It also founded economic cooperation zones in Shijiazhuang's Xingtang and Handan's Jize counties in Hebei province, as well as Tsitsihar in Heilongjiang province.

In 2013, Qingdao West Coast Export Processing Zone was put under the administration of the port zone, and Qingdao Export Processing Zone was added in 2016. As a result, the port zone now has a management area of about 70 sq km.

After years of development, the port zone has built up 10 industrial platforms for import goods, high and new technology, cultural trade, bonded futures trading of bulk commodities, agricultural products trading, cross-border e-commerce, automobiles, logistics, aviation, and opto-electronics.

In 2017, the zone's GDP reached 12.06 billion yuan ($1.75 billion) while total export-import volume was $12.96 billion. The growth rate of its export-import volume and added value of industrial enterprises above designated size ranked first in the city, respectively 37.6 and 8.3 percentage points higher than the city's average.
