Songyuan Economical and Technological Development Zone was established in 1993 with the approval of Jilin provincial government, and was upgraded into a State-level development zone in March 2013 under the approval of the State Council. With an administrative area of 118 square kilometers and a planned area of 53.5 sq km, it has a total population of 29,000.

The development zone focuses on the construction of four leading industries, covering agricultural and sideline products processing and food processing, bio-chemicals and petrochemicals, building materials processing, and oilfield support. At present, 480 enterprises have settled in the zone, among which 86 are industrial enterprises.

By the end of August 2017, the region's GDP has totaled 13.4 billion yuan ($1.98 billion), up 5.1 percent year-on-year. The added value of the primary industry reached 227 million yuan, an increase of 6.6 percent over the year before. The added value of the secondary industry reached 10.71 billion yuan, up by 3.6 percent year-on-year. Among them, the industrial added value was 9.8 billion yuan. The added value of the tertiary industry added up to 2.47 billion yuan, up by 12.1 percent, accounting for 18.4 percent of the GDP, and the investment of fixed assets was 13.47 billion yuan.
