Established in May 2001, Laiwu National Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone in Shandong province was upgraded by the State Council to a national-level hi-tech zone on Sept 29, 2015.

Covering an area of 108.5 square kilometers, the zone is blessed with convenient transport, with the Beijing-Shanghai, Jinan-Qingdao, and Boshan-Laiwu expressways passing through. It only takes 40 minutes to drive to Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport and two hours to Qingdao Port, a comprehensive world-class port. Besides, the Qingdao Customs set up its office in the zone, making it easier to export products.

The zone has attracted many renowned domestic and overseas companies since its founding, including China's largest juice producer, Huiyuan Group, China-based manufacturer of sanitary paper products, Vinda International Holdings, and China's leading machinery equipment maker, Sany Heavy Industry Co.

After years of development, the zone has established an industrial system centered on electronic information, new materials, precision equipment manufacturing, textiles and garments, and food and beverages.

It is expected that the zone's GDP will reach 20 billion yuan ($2.90 billion) by 2020, with an average annual increase of 13.5 percent.

The total output value of industrial enterprises above designated size will exceed 70 billion yuan, with an average annual growth of 13 percent. More than 45 percent of the output value will be contributed by the hi-tech industries.

Also, there will be four innovative industrial clusters each with an annual operation revenue surpassing 10 billion yuan by 2020.
