Founded in 1992, Xiangtan High-tech Industrial Development Zone was upgraded to national level status by the State Council in 2009 and approved as part of the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone in 2014.

Situated on the middle east of the Xiangjiang River, the zone sits at the geographic center of Hunan, serving as a strategic point in the Rise of Central China Plan, as well as a key part of the national pilot area for a resource-saving and environment-friendly society. The zone governs two sub-districts: Shuangma and Bantang, with a planning area of 46.8 square kilometers.

Through years of development, wind power generation, mining equipment manufacturing, and deep processing of rolled steel have become the three pillar industries of the zone. A number of 1,137 enterprises and companies have settled in the zone by the end of 2016, including 154 enterprises above designated size and eight listed enterprises.

Relying on its rich high-tech talents, the zone has developed more than 2,600 high-tech products and 95 items supported by the National Innovation Fund Project, making the zone a major base for technological innovation and prominent industrial characteristics in Hunan and even central China.

In the first half of 2018, the total income from technology, industry and trade saw a growth of 15 percent. The total industrial output value increased by 8.4 percent. The contribution of the total financial revenue reached 1.18 billion yuan, a year-on-year growth of 8.34 percent.
