Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Development Zone was founded in September 1996. It covers an area of 11.5 square kilometers. It has been honored as one of six national key science parks. 

It adheres to the principles of self-innovation and harmonious development. A large number of domestic and foreign enterprises were introduced to the high-tech zone, such as Huawei, ZTE, Mindray, Changyuan New Materials, IBM, Philips, Olympus, Epson etc. It has formed industrial clusters of electronic information, bioengineering and new materials. At present, the high-tech zone encourages the development of software, scientific research, transformation of results, higher education and more.

In 2017, Shenzhen High-tech Industrial Development Zone ranked second among national high-tech zones in China. In the first half of 2018, the operating revenue was 368.5 billion yuan ($54.5 billion), a year-on-year increase of 19.9 percent.
