Sitting in the southeast of Weihai city, Shandong province, Weihai Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved by the State Council in October 1992. With a registered population of 168,000 and permanent population of 225,000, the zone covers an area of 278.16 square kilometers, governing three towns and 108 villages.

The zone has a comprehensive transportation network, and plays a key role in the country's exports to South Korea and Japan. To develop high-end and green industries and clusters, the zone has devoted itself to growing three traditional manufacturing industries (transportation equipment, light textile clothing and marine health food) and four high and new technology industries (intelligent manufacturing equipment, electronic information, new materials and marine biomedicine).

In 2016, its regional GDP hit 22.5 billion yuan ($3.27 billion) while its fixed-asset investment and total retail sales of consumer goods reached 17.1 billion yuan and 13.2 billion yuan respectively. The zone has introduced 1,064 investment projects from 40 countries and regions, while its foreign investment in actual use added up to $2.33 billion.
