Overview

Jilin Province is located in the geographic center of Northeast Asia, the hinterland of Northeast China. It is adjacent to Liaoning Province in the south, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the west and Heilongjiang Province in the north; it borders Russia in the east and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea along the Tumen River and the Yalu River in the southeast. 

From east to west, it has a natural formation of such four ecotopes as the eastern Changbai Mountain primeval forest ecotope, the central and eastern hilly secondary vegetation ecotope, the central Songliao Plain ecotope and the western prairie wetland.

Jilin Province is located in the world renowned black soil belt. The province's arable land is 7.03 million hectares, accounting for about 30 percent of the province's total land area, while ranking ninth worldwide.

GDP in Jilin province in 2018 was 1.51 trillion yuan ($215 billion), with a year-on-year growth of 4.5 percent. The added value of primary industry increased by 2 percent; the secondary industry rose 4 percent and the tertiary industry grew by 5.5 percent. 

Pillar Industries

Jilin province is the cradle of China's grains and industry. Changchun, capital of the province, is renowned for its auto manufacturing, film producing and education all around the country.

Auto manufacturing

Auto manufacturing is the most prominent industry in Jilin province and holds a significant position in China. During the 13th Five-Year Plan, the province plans to improve its research and development on auto manufacturing and at the same time build a components industrial cluster.

Petrochemical Industry

The petrochemical industry is another pillar of Jilin province. Programs to promote the structural reform of the materials industry and to accelerate comprehensive petroleum exploitation have gone underway in recent years as the province plans to build an industrial base worth 100 billion yuan.

Railway vehicle manufacturing

Railway vehicle manufacturing is a competitive industry in Jilin province. CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles' railway and subway trains constitute roughly half of the trains in China and have been exported to more than 30 countries and regions. The company today is among the highest producers of train equipment of the highest quality. Every year, 1,500 CRH trains, 2,000 intercity trains and 500 ordinary railway trains leave the factory.

Advantages

Since the reform and opening-up, especially that the CPC Central Committee implemented the strategy of reviving the old industrial bases in the Northeast and other regions in October 2003, Jilin broke through the deep-seated contradictions in systems, mechanisms and structures. It holds the following competitive advantages:

First, Jilin possesses comprehensive economic strength. It adheres to the principle of scientific development, deepening reforms, considerable innovation and strenuous enterprising, and takes full effort to emphasize the work in fortification storming for the state-owned enterprise reform, investment stimulation, opening to the outside world, reinforcing county rights for its prosperity, soaring economic development of private sectors and leapfrog development of the service industry. Consequently, the province witnessed rapid economic development, enlarged total quantity, and remarkable enhancement in comprehensive strength, all-round social progress and showed obvious improvements in livelihood. The old industrial base is now filled with vigor and vitality. From 2004 to 2013, the province's gross economic magnitude successively soared to RMB 300 billion, RMB 400 billion, RMB 500 billion, RMB 600 billion, RMB 700 billion, RMB 800 billion and then RMB 1 trillion in 2011, realizing development by leaps and bounds. In 2013, this figure reached RMB 1.29815 trillion, up 8.3 percent, or representing an annual average growth rate of 13.29 percent; local financial revenue topped RMB 100 billion and the ratio of the three sectors was 11.6:52.8:35.6

Second, the outlets of financial institutions in Jilin have been impressive. There are a total of 4,783 outlets of financial institutions in the province's banking industry (including policy banks, large-scale commercial banks, joint-stock banks, post savings banks, foreign banks, asset management companies, urban commercial banks, rural small and medium-sized financial institutions, trust companies, financial companies and automotive finance companies), achieving a universal coverage with physical outlets of financial institutions in towns and villages. Branches of nonnative banks have been successfully introduced, including HSBC Bank, Hana Bank, Pudong Development Bank, China CITIC Bank, Huaxia Bank, China Merchants Bank, Minsheng Bank, Industrial Bank and Shengjing Bank; besides, Jilin Branch of Import and Export Bank of China is also set up there. The Northeast Asian Financial Headquarters are in the process of planning construction, and the supporting capacity for financial service economic development is continuously enhanced. Now there are two securities companies (Northeast Securities and Hengtai Securities), three futures companies, 1,729 insurance companies and their subsidiaries, and 40 domestic listing companies.

Third, the convenient transportation is competitive. Centralized on Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province, the road and railway network connects to all major cities in the province and attains coverage to all large and medium-sized cities in China, which basically forms a modern three-dimensional transport network extending in all directions and to be quick and convenient. 

Forth, it is a united and Harmonious Multiracial Province. It has a total population of 27.18 million (by 2018), of which the population in urban areas accounted for 54.20 percent. Jilin is a multiracial province and has a total of 56 nationalities including the Korean, Manchu, Mongolian, Hui and Sibo nationalities. In addition to the Han nationality, the 55 minority nationalities account for around 8% of the province's total population. The Korean nationality is mainly distributed in east Jilin Province, such as Yanbian, Jilin, Tonghua and Baishan; the Mongolian and Sibo nationalities are mainly distributed in Baicheng and Songyuan Cities in west Jilin Province; the Manchu and Hui nationalities are mainly distributed in Changchun, Jilin, Tonghua and Siping cities.
